If you've got your first fan meet photo coming up, there's one thing you might not have considered yet: what pose are you going to do?

It sounds silly, but it's surprisingly common to freeze the moment you get in front of your favourite artist.

You've waited months for this event. You've planned your outfit, spent ages getting ready, travelled to the venue, and maybe even practised a few poses in the mirror beforehand. Then suddenly you're standing next to someone you've spent years supporting and your brain decides to leave the chat.

The result? A lot of fans end up defaulting to a peace sign and hoping for the best.

Trust us, you're definitely not the first person this has happened to.

While some events let fans choose their own poses, some organisers and management teams now provide approved pose options beforehand to help photo sessions run smoothly and make sure everyone gets their turn.

So whether you're preparing for your first fan meet or simply looking to try something different, here are some of the most popular poses you'll come across, along with a few emergency options for when the star-struck panic kicks in.

 

Not Every Event Lets You Choose Your Pose

One of the biggest surprises for first-time attendees is discovering that photo poses are sometimes decided before the event even begins.

At some fan meets, organisers are provided with a selection of approved poses directly from the artist's management team. Fans are usually shown examples ahead of time and asked to choose from those options. This helps keep the photo session running smoothly, especially when hundreds of attendees are waiting for their turn.

When I attended JUNHEE's event earlier this year, fans received a message before the show explaining that a set of pre-selected poses would be used for the photo benefits. We were encouraged to review the examples beforehand so everyone would know what to expect and the photography session could stay on schedule.

At first it might seem a little restrictive. Then you're standing in line, suddenly questioning every pose you've ever seen in your life, and having somebody else make the decision starts to sound quite appealing.

 

Popular Fan Meet Photo Poses

The examples below include a mixture of official management-approved poses and fan-meet favourites we've seen used across K-pop, T-pop and BL events. Not every event will offer every pose, but they're a great source of inspiration if you're preparing for an upcoming photo opportunity.

 

🐻 Bear Ears

One of the cutest and most popular options.

The idol or actor places their hands above your head like bear ears, or both of you make the gesture together.

Perfect for: Cute, playful photos.

 

😺 Cat Ears (Jjonyangi Pose)

A close relative of the Bear Ears pose, but with a slightly more mischievous twist.

The Jjonyangi Pose involves using your fingers to create cat ears above your head or beside your face. It's become increasingly popular in idol selfies, social media content and fan meet photos thanks to its cute and playful look.

If you've spent any time scrolling through idol Instagram posts, chances are you've seen this one more than a few times.

Perfect for: Cute concepts, playful photos and anyone wanting to embrace their inner cat.

😘 Chu

A fan-meet favourite.

The "Chu" pose usually involves a kissy face, finger heart, cheek gesture, or a combination of all three. It's become a staple pose across K-pop, T-pop and BL events.

😊 One Hand Under Chin

Simple, flattering and surprisingly easy to do when you're feeling nervous.

Place the back of your hand or your fingers gently against your chin or cheek. This is often used by idols because it frames the face naturally and creates a cute, relaxed look.

Sometimes you'll see artists angle their hand slightly to show their preferred side.

Perfect for: Fans who want something subtle, simple and photogenic.

 

👉 Pointing to the Cheek

A playful pose that's become increasingly common in idol photos and fan-meet selfies.

Simply point a finger towards your cheek while smiling for the camera. Some artists combine this with a wink or other cute expressions to make the pose even more playful.

Perfect for: Fans looking for an easy pose that still feels very "idol-inspired".

You can't talk about fan meet photos without mentioning hearts.

Whether it's a classic finger heart, a half heart shared with the artist, or a larger heart shape created together, heart poses have become one of the most recognisable parts of fan culture.

The finger heart is probably the most iconic. Created by crossing your thumb and index finger to form a tiny heart, it's a simple way to show affection and appreciation and has become a staple at fan meetings, concerts and selfies alike.

Half hearts are also incredibly popular. You create one side of the heart while the artist completes the other, making the photo feel a little more interactive and personal.

When Your Brain Stops Working: Emergency Fan Meet Poses

Let's be realistic for a moment.

No matter how much you prepare, there is always a chance you'll get to the front of the queue and completely forget every pose you've ever seen.

If that happens, don't panic.

What actually happened? Your brain has stopped processing information and you're doing whatever feels natural.

Surprisingly, it still looks great in photos.

 

Even Experienced Fans Get Star-Struck

Having attended a number of K-pop and BL events, we can honestly say that no amount of preparation completely protects you from being star-struck.

You can spend weeks planning the perfect pose, only to forget everything the moment you're standing next to your favourite artist.

One of my most memorable examples was meeting Big Ocean and, more specifically, my bias, PJ.

PJ was very handsome and charismatic, had an open shirt, and my brain seemed completely incapable of deciding where I should be looking. The camera? PJ? Somewhere in the middle distance? The floor? Honestly, all options felt equally difficult in that moment.

I like to think of myself as a reasonably confident person, but within seconds I had somehow reverted back to being a bashful teenager with a crush.

I look back and cringe now, but it's also a good reminder that being star-struck is completely normal.

The good thing is that idols and actors experience these interactions every day and are usually very good at helping fans feel comfortable. Whether you choose a carefully planned pose or end up defaulting to a peace sign because you've gone completely blank, what you'll remember most afterwards is the excitement of the moment rather than the pose itself.

And when event staff are trying to move hundreds of people through a photo line, having an approved pose ready to go can be a lifesaver for everyone involved.

 

Remember Why You're There

At the end of the day, there isn't really a "perfect" fan meet pose.

Some fans love cute concepts like Bear Ears or Chu. Others stick to a classic peace sign. Many events will have official poses selected by management, while some artists even allow fans to vote for their favourites beforehand.

The most important thing is enjoying the experience.

The photo itself lasts forever, but the moment usually lasts only a few seconds.

So if you've got an upcoming K-pop concert, T-pop event or BL fan meet, save a few pose ideas, take a deep breath when it's your turn, and enjoy every second of it.
